The Center for Race and Gender (CRG) and Los Angeles' Cornerstone Theater Company are pleased to present a public reading and workshop of Los Illegals for the campus of the University of California at Berkeley. ALL UC BERKELEY STUDENTS, STAFF AND FACULTY ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE. Over the course of two days, Cornerstone artists, including members of the original cast of Los Illegals, will lead an introductory workshop on their practices, followed by a public reading and discussion moderated by Cornerstone Artistic Director Michael John Garcés and Evelyn Nakano Glenn, Director of the CRG.

In 2007, Cornerstone Theater Company launched the three-year Justice Cycle, five world premiere plays exploring how laws shape and disrupt communities, in their home city of Los Angeles. The first play in the cycle, Los Illegals, was written by Artistic Director Michael John Garcés and created in collaboration with undocumented workers, immigration activists, lawyers, judges and others on the front lines of the battle over illegal immigration. The cast of 26 performers included many community members such as day laborers and domestic workers, whose stories were the inspiration for the play. The project was truly unprecedented in having undocumented populations actively involved throughout the creative process.

LOS ILLEGALS PUBLIC READING & DISCUSSION (open to the public)

Please join us for a public reading of Los Illegals, which will be performed by members of the Berkeley campus community, as well as local day laborers and domestic workers, and stay for a rousing post-performance discussion, moderated by playwright Michael John Garcés and CRG Director Evelyn Nakano Glenn.  No RSVP is necessary to attend the reading.

CORNERSTONE METHODOLOGY WORKSHOP (RSVP, see application below)
Monday, February 11, 2008  1:00-5:00 pm
8th Floor of Barrows Hall, Lipman Room

Join us for a hands-on, interactive workshop in Cornerstone's unique community-based theater practices.  Learn how Cornerstone artists use such community-building strategies as Story Circles, inclusive auditions and rehearsals for professional and first-time artists alike.  The company has been honing these methods over two decades, and using them to create some of the most artistically significant and vital community-based theater in the country.  The workshop will be led by Michael John Garcés and Antonia Grace Glenn. This workshop is limited to 50 participants.  To reserve a space, please submit the APPLICATION FOR THE CORNERSTONE METHODOLOGY WORKSHOP at the end of this email to Johnny George at rng2@berkeley.edu.

PERFORM IN THE LOS ILLEGALS READING (RSVP, see application below)
Rehearsals: Monday, Feb 11 6:00-10:00 pm & Tuesday, Feb 12 1:00-4:00 pm
8th Floor of Barrows Hall, Lipman Room

Come be part of the cast for a public reading of Los Illegals by Michael John Garcés. Created over the course of one full year, Los Illegals is a product of many hours of interviews with undocumented workers and visits to work sites, courthouses, rallies and community gatherings. In the original production, several of the people whose stories inspired the play appeared on stage, acting alongside Cornerstone's professional artists. To perform in the reading, you must attend the Cornerstone Methodology Workshop and be available for both rehearsals and the Los Illegals reading.
